The former post office near Bolzano train
station was transformed for the South
Tyrol Regional Administration and raised
by two storeys. After performing thermal
calculations, Prof. Wolfgang Feist from
the Passive Institute in Darmstadt encouraged
us to create a system of different
window reveals. Through the variation
of reveals on the previously monotonous
punctuated façade, rooms on
lower floor get more natural light while
the upper floors are shaded. Reveals to
the sides offer individual views. Though
the building has only 16 % window surface,
this will cause no problems with
the passive house construction, it rather
helps saving building costs. Because of
its low designed energy consumption of
less than 1.5 l fuel oil per square metre
and year, the building was awarded the
ClimateHouse Gold Medal (< 10 kWh/
